Job Summary

We are seeking a Junior Biocurator to support ongoing variant curation in our ClinGen Ocular Anterior Segment Dysgenesis Curation support will entail annotating biomedical literature using a web-based annotation tool, applying frameworks for the assessment of genes and variants in disease within expert panels. This individual will learn to read and critically evaluate the primary literature to identify, synthesize, and present relevant data under the supervision of the supervisor and senior biocurators in the OASD VCEP.  

Responsibilities*

The selected candidate will be expected to participate in lab meetings, biocurator meetings, and research meetings within UM and with the ocular anterior segment VCEP group. With supervision and training, the candidate will interact with clinical domain experts and may present data to curation groups on conference calls. Successful job performance will require learning and implementing the curation framework and protocols developed by ClinGen under the supervision and training from senior staff. The biocurator will also deposit variant curations into the the CSPEC framework and submit for public view. The focus will be on curation of variants associated with PAX6 gene and aniridia.  

Required Qualifications*

The selected candidate must have a basic understanding of genetics, biochemistry, and physiology. The selected candidate must be able to collect data from the literature. In addition, the selected candidate should have the ability to work independently under supervision, as well as collaboratively with colleagues.
BA or BS in recognized field of science related to the position. This position is not available for visa sponsorship and requires authorization to work in the United States, and candidates should be available on or before June 30, 2026
Highly motivated responsible individual with excellent communication and organizational skills.   
Ability to interact with multidisciplinary team.

Desired Qualifications*

Undergraduate degree in Genetics, Biology, or related topic. Practical experience with reading and/or annotating biomedical literature would be beneficial. In addition, ideal candidates would possess working knowledge of online genetic databases such OMIM, gnomAD, and ClinVar, as well as familiarity with basic Excel, powerpoint, Word, Google docs, and web-based conferencing platforms such as Zoom. The ability to think critically and an enjoyment of accomplishing challenging tasks would be helpful.

Modes of Work
