JOB DESCRIPTION
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Directs traffic by hand signals or operation of traffic light in conjunction with the movement of children to and from school; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class performs specialized work in the control of traffic in conjunction with the movement of children to and from school within New Castle County, excluding the City of Wilmington, and is limited to those hours when school is opening, recessing, closing, or summer school hours. General supervision is received from the School Crossing Guard Supervisor. Employees are generally hired as a substitute and are placed in permanent assignments as vacancies become available. Applicants for this position must have their own transportation.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
- Controls traffic by hand or traffic lights at designated crossing to allow children to cross safely;
- Controls children using the crossing to assure that they conform to traffic regulations;
- Reports children who fail to cooperate;
- Promotes an ongoing attitude of dedication to excellent public service and ensures that external and internal customers are provided with the highest quality of service.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Some knowledge of traffic regulations; ability and willingness to work in inclement weather throughout the year; a liking for children; ability to communicate courteously and effectively; ability to follow oral and written instructions; mental alertness and ability to react quickly and properly in an emergency; courtesy; tact; ability to pass a Class III County physical examination.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: At least one year work experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; on-the-job training will be provided.
