Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Counseling, Advising and the First Year Experience (FYE), the Director of First Year Experience and Student Success Initiatives is responsible for the overall implementation and coordination of First Year Experience (FYE) programming. The Director provides collaborative leadership for the strategic preparation, implementation, and appraisal of the services and activities to advance student academic and transfer success. The Director engages in data-based decision-making and collaboration with staff and faculty to facilitate efforts across the college to increase retention and student success rates of first-time freshman and transfer students. The Director will utilize student development theory and the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) to address the needs of students. The Director will be responsible for keeping abreast of national trends and will play a critical role in system-wide retention initiatives. The Director will participate in scholarly activities to enhance the successful delivery of quality and inclusive services and programs across the college to ensure a seamless approach for student's success. Specific areas of responsibility include retention; academic persistence; coordinating activities of the Transfer Center; and managing early alerts through Starfish Retention Solutions and coordinating interventions and support student to increase student's capacity to persist and succeed. The Academic Faculty Counselors, Orientation and Transfer Program staff will report to the Director. This position will work with the staff to coordinate and implement plans and activities offered through Orientation and First Year Experience; aid in the growth of other office initiatives; provide individualized and holistic monitoring; track and support students from diverse backgrounds and experiences in a manner that facilitate successful student transitions and integration into the college campus environment. The Director will provide leadership to reporting staff in developing, monitoring, measuring and assessing annual program reviews and action plan goals and priorities, to include Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). The incumbent will be a member of Associate Vice President for Counseling, Advising and the First Year Experience team and will serve as a valuable team member and resource within the Division of Student Affairs.

The duties for this position included, but are not limited to:

 

 

 

  • Provides vision, strategic direction and accountability for developing programs and implementing high-impact practices and services that support undergraduates' academic transition, engaging first-year experiences, retention, and success.
  • Provides leadership of the first-year experience, working with the faculty to create learning communities and other programs focused on first-year college students.
  • Develops, administers, and analyzes annual assessments of the first-year experience and student retention programs. Collaborates with college leadership to identify metrics as an indicator of student progression and retention. Develops and evaluates statistical, analytical, and narrative reports used for decision-making and plan improvement.
  • Builds and strengthen relationships within the college to provide a comprehensive first-year experience for first-year students aligned with CSN's mission and goals, providing plans and strategies for retention and progression of first-year students.
  • Develop a campus-wide first-year experience committee, serves on other committees and collaborates with others in student and academic affairs as assigned.
  • Ensures the preparation and dissemination of materials promoting the first year, programs and activities that which support student success and retention initiatives.
  • Participates in grant writing activities and assists in securing external financing to support initiatives.

 


Required Qualifications

 

 

 

  • Master's degree in Education, Higher Education, Counseling, Student Success, Student Personnel, or related area from an accredited institution.
  • 3 years of experience at a director level supervising programs focused on first-year students, student retention, student success, or related experience.
  • 3 years of experience with data analysis, reporting, and use of data in decision-making, success in project management, and managing multiple priorities.
  • 2 years of experience in supporting students from underrepresented groups, including students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation-to-college students, LGBTQ identified individuals, students with disabilities, and low-income students.
  • 2 years of experience in assessment strategies to rate, analyze and improve FYE students' performance.
  • 2 years of experience managing budgets, assessing program effectiveness, and successfully applying for grants to support program development.
  • 1 year of experience teaching in a higher education setting, program course assessment and curriculum development.

 


Preferred Qualifications

 

 

 

  • Terminal degree (E.Ds., Ed.D., Ph.D.) in Education, Higher Education, Counseling, Student Success, Student Personnel, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • 3 years' of experience in the supervision of counseling, student success working with students, faculty, and administrators or related department of higher education.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and student privacy as appropriate.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to write reports based on data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to recruit, hire, train, schedule, and manage full-time, part-time, and temporary employees.
  • Ability to collaborate with various university departments and external partners to support a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated awareness of, sensitivity, and commitment to diversity, inclusivity and effectively engaging with diverse personalities and managing difficult situations.
  • Experience in a community college setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to quickly synthesize information in order to make informed recommendations.
  • Experience working in a collaborative, dynamic and complex office environment.
  • Excellent judgment and awareness of interpersonal dynamics while possessing strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships (such as students, staff, faculty and community partners).
  • Knowledge of FERPA.
  • Proficiency in basic data management systems and assessment practices (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Outlook, WordPress [website]).
  • Proven knowledge of current research, theory and best practices of first-year student experience and student retention programs, and career service models.
